South Korea's Danuri Orbiter Captures SpaceX Rocket Debris Impact Site on Moon

South Korea's Danuri lunar orbiter has successfully photographed the impact zone on the Moon where a segment of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket collided on Wednesday. The images, released by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), depict the lunar surface both prior to and following the event, revealing a newly formed crater.

The defunct rocket component, launched in 2015, had been on a collision course with the Moon for several weeks. Its uncontrolled descent culminated in an impact that carved a fresh indentation into the lunar regolith.

Danuri, which commenced its lunar mission in December, continues to orbit and map the Moon, providing valuable data. This incident underscores the increasing issue of space debris and its uncontrolled re-entries or impacts, posing a persistent challenge for future space exploration and orbital operations.
