Lammy Leverages Unlikely US Friendship Amidst UK-US Tensions

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy has travelled to Washington for separate meetings with US Vice-President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. These discussions, each lasting approximately 45 minutes at the White House, focused primarily on the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.

Strategic Diplomatic Engagement

Notably, it is Lammy's established relationship with Vice-President Vance that the British Government is actively utilising. This unlikely friendship began during Lammy's tenure as an opposition MP and Vance's initial election to the US Senate. Last summer, Vance and his family even stayed with Lammy at Chevening, his grace and favour residence in Kent, during a visit to the UK.

Posting on X, Lammy confirmed the meeting, stating, "Great to catch up with my friend JD Vance today in DC following his talks in Pakistan." He added, "It is vital that the ceasefire continues and we get shipping flowing freely again through the Straits of Hormuz. We continue to work together towards a just and lasting peace in Ukraine."

Leaders' Divergent Public Stances

These meetings unfold as public tensions persist between the leaders of both nations. The Prime Minister recently reiterated his criticism of President Trump's recent rhetoric, specifically his threat that a "whole civilisation will die tonight" aimed at Iran. Sir Keir Starmer has also publicly criticised Trump's language, stating it was "wrong" to threaten Iranian civilians.

Furthermore, Sir Keir has previously linked Trump with Russian President Vladimir Putin when discussing rising household bills, while President Trump has consistently expressed public disdain for the Prime Minister, even suggesting he is "not Winston Churchill." The UK has also distanced itself from any potential US blockade of Iranian ports.
