Lance Bombardier Ciara Sullivan Dies After Royal Windsor Horse Show Fall
Lance Bombardier Ciara Sullivan, 24, a soldier with the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery, has died after falling from her horse at the Royal Windsor Horse Show. The incident took place just after 19:00 BST as Sullivan was leaving the arena following a display. Despite immediate medical attention, she sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her commanding officer described Sullivan as "a bright light in any room she entered" and "an immensely professional soldier and an exceptional jockey." Tributes highlighted her as a "fearless and gifted horsewoman" who consistently uplifted those around her.
King Charles III and other members of the royal family were present at the event and were reportedly "shocked and saddened" by her death, with a commitment to offer personal condolences to her family. Thames Valley Police have stated that no suspicious circumstances have been identified in relation to the death.
Sullivan joined the Army at 18, enrolling in the Army Training Centre in Pirbright, Surrey, before joining the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery in 2021. She participated in significant national ceremonies, including the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022 and King Charles's coronation in 2023, and had recently qualified as an advanced regimental riding instructor.
Defence Secretary John Healey remarked that Sullivan was "a brilliant young soldier who served our nation with dedication."
