Late-Night Passengers Left Stranded at Mullingar Station After Fleadh Cheoil Event

Passengers disembarking a special late-night train service from Dublin were left trapped inside Mullingar station after staff locked the building, mistakenly believing all passengers had exited. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday morning, following the conclusion of the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann festival.

Reports indicate the train, which arrived at approximately 00:40 BST, was one of several additional services laid on by Irish Rail to accommodate the thousands attending the traditional music event in Mullingar. Passengers inside the station were forced to contact emergency services and family members to alert them to their predicament.

A spokesperson for Irish Rail confirmed the incident, stating that an internal investigation is now underway. They apologised for the distress caused, noting that staff had "mistakenly locked up" without ensuring the station was clear. The spokesperson added that station procedures have been reinforced to prevent a recurrence.

This lapse raises questions about operational oversight, particularly when managing increased passenger numbers for large-scale events. While no physical harm was reported, the incident underscores the potential for systemic failures within public transport operations, even in routine procedures such as station closure.
