Leicestershire Child Abuser John Siddell Jailed for 15 Years After Faking Disability
John Siddell has received a 15-year prison sentence, with an additional two-year extended licence, for child sexual abuse offences. His brother, James Siddell, was sentenced to two years and nine months for perverting the course of justice by assisting in the elaborate deception. The sentences were handed down at Leicester Crown Court following a protracted investigation.
John Siddell faced allegations of abusing three boys under 14 in Leicestershire, first surfacing in June 2021. To obstruct the investigation, John, supported by James, presented as mute and immobile, claiming a stroke rendered him unable to commit the acts. This façade persisted through police interviews and initial court proceedings, nearly derailing the case.
Detective Constable Matt Gibson of Leicestershire Police remained suspicious. His scepticism was vindicated in April 2024 during a chance encounter in Blyth, Northumberland. Gibson observed John Siddell sitting upright and alert while being pushed in a wheelchair by James, in stark contrast to his usual comatose presentation for official assessments.
Further investigation revealed the brothers frequented local social clubs, attending Elvis Presley tribute nights and watching Newcastle United football matches. John was captured on CCTV at one club, actively selling domino cards and engaging in conversation, directly contradicting his claims of incapacitation. Medical staff who treated John in July 2024, after a fabricated health deterioration, described him as "chatty" and "the most verbal, non-verbal person I've ever met."
John Siddell was ultimately convicted of 15 counts of child sexual abuse. Both brothers pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice after facing irrefutable evidence, including CCTV footage of John walking unassisted. Their refusal to attend their sentencing hearing marked a final act of defiance.
