Derek Poole, 91, Dies in Selston Garage Explosion and Fire
Derek Poole, 91, a revered figure in the local community, was confirmed dead after a significant explosion and fire consumed the garage of his Selston home on Saturday evening. Emergency crews responded to Church Lane at approximately 19:18 BST, where a body was later recovered from the debris.
Mr Poole's family stated he was in his workshop, which also served as a television room, when the explosion occurred. Nottinghamshire Police and the Fire and Rescue Service have launched a joint investigation into the incident's cause. A post-mortem examination is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
Known for his passion for cars, Mr Poole was a former grass track racer who once owned a garage and haulage company. He had resided at the property for 40 years and was a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Tributes on the Nottingham Autograss Club Facebook page consistently described him as a "true gentleman" and a "legend of our sport."
Local residents reported hearing multiple loud explosions, prompting evacuations and road closures, which have since been lifted. The fire was brought under control by 21:50 BST on Saturday, though one crew remained on scene overnight. Authorities have indicated there is no wider threat to the public, treating the incident as isolated.
