Counter-Terrorism Police Arrest Two Over East London Former Synagogue Arson Attack
A man, 45, and a woman, 52, have been arrested by counter-terrorism police on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson following a fire at the former East London Central Synagogue in Whitechapel. The arrests occurred on Sunday, with both individuals taken into police custody.
The fire, reported at 05:16 BST on Tuesday, caused minor damage to the front gates and a lock at the building. Surveillance footage indicates the blaze was intentionally set. No injuries were reported.
Broader Context of Attacks
This incident follows multiple attacks and attempted attacks targeting Jewish sites across London in recent weeks, including a double stabbing in Golders Green classified as a terrorist act.
Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, stated the arrests represent a "significant step" in the ongoing investigation. She emphasised the commitment to apprehending and charging all those responsible for "hateful attacks" on Jewish, Israeli, and Iranian sites. Detective Superintendent Oliver Richter, leading policing in Hackney and Tower Hamlets, noted the synagogue building is currently being sold to a local Somali Muslim organisation, highlighting the broad community condemnation of the act.
The Metropolitan Police and counter-terrorism officers are continuing to provide security advice to various organisations and community venues, urging public vigilance and reporting of concerns.
