
Leipzig Car Attack Kills Two, Injures 22; Driver Apprehended by German Police
Two people have died and 22 sustained injuries, including two seriously, after a car was driven into a crowd in Leipzig, Germany, on Monday afternoon.
Mayor Burkhard Jung confirmed the apprehension of the suspected perpetrator, stating that the motivation behind the incident remains unknown to authorities.
Leipzig fire chief Axel Schuh detailed the extensive emergency response, with approximately 40 firefighters and 40 paramedics deployed to the scene, supported by two helicopters.
Police confirmed that a car struck multiple individuals in the central Grimmaische Straße area before the driver fled. The driver was subsequently arrested, with police assuring the public that no further danger emanates from the individual.
By 17:35 local time, police declared the immediate danger over, and the area around the square was cordoned off. Unverified social media images depicted a yellow emergency helicopter and numerous ambulances at the incident site.
