Liberal Democrats Propose Air Conditioning Mandate for UK Public Buildings and New Homes

The Liberal Democrats have outlined a policy demanding that all new schools, hospitals, and homes be fitted with air conditioning, arguing the UK is demonstrably unprepared for sustained periods of extreme heat. The party's announcement precedes another anticipated heatwave across parts of the country, highlighting what they characterise as a critical infrastructure deficit.

Tim Farron, the Liberal Democrat environment spokesperson, stated that the current government has failed to implement sufficient measures to safeguard the public from rising temperatures. He emphasised that the lack of adequate cooling systems in essential public services and housing places vulnerable populations at unnecessary risk.

The proposal includes a call for local authorities to be granted greater powers to enforce building regulations that mandate such installations. This would, according to the party, ensure that future construction projects incorporate climate resilience from their inception, rather than relying on reactive solutions after heat-related crises occur.
