Lincoln Teenager Declan Sawyer Drowns in Swanholme Lakes as Family Warns Water Dangers
A 15-year-old boy, Declan Sawyer, drowned in Swanholme Lakes near Lincoln on Sunday, as the UK experienced exceptionally high temperatures. Emergency services recovered Declan following reports of a boy in distress in the water around 14:30 BST.
His father, Carl Sawyer, described Declan as a “funny and outgoing young man who loved his fishing and his football,” adding that he possessed “a very cheeky smile and the personality to match.” Carl emphasised the family’s profound loss, stating Declan was “very much loved by his friends and family, and will be missed dearly by many.”
Following the tragedy, Carl issued a stark warning to other parents and children. “With his tragic and unexpected passing on Sunday at Swanholme Lakes, we would like to raise awareness about children playing near any rivers or lakes in the hot weather,” he stated. “Please can all parents, friends and family make their children aware of the dangers surrounding water.”
Priory City of Lincoln Academy, where Declan was a student, released a statement confirming the “devastating” loss. The academy highlighted Declan’s role as “a valued member of our academy and a loyal friend to many students,” noting that his “presence and character in our academy will be sorely missed by staff and students alike.”
