Lincolnshire Farmer Cleared After Fatal Shooting of Burglar Marcus Smith
A Lincolnshire farmer, previously arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a man during an alleged burglary, will face no further legal action. Marcus Smith, 19, sustained a fatal gunshot wound at a property in the village of South Ormsby on 27th March 2024. Lincolnshire Police have confirmed the conclusion of their investigation into the incident.
Emergency services were dispatched to a rural address following reports of a shooting. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. A 30-year-old local man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of murder and later released on bail as inquiries continued.
Police stated that following a thorough review of the evidence, and consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), a decision was made not to proceed with charges. The investigation considered all available evidence regarding the circumstances leading to Smith's death during the attempted burglary.
This outcome reflects the complex legal framework surrounding self-defence and the protection of property, particularly in rural communities where such incidents can provoke intense public debate. The decision not to prosecute the farmer brings an end to the formal police inquiry into the tragic events of March 2024.
