Singapore Court Orders Bloomberg to Pay $356,000 to Ministers for Defamation
Singapore's High Court has ordered Bloomberg to pay damages totalling $356,000 to two prominent government officials, K. Shanmugam and Vivian Balakrishnan, following a defamation lawsuit. The ruling, delivered on Monday, concluded that an article published by Bloomberg in September 2022 contained defamatory imputations that had negatively affected the ministers' standing.
The legal action stemmed from an article that discussed the rental of state-owned bungalows by the two ministers, suggesting improper conduct in the acquisition of luxury properties. Shanmugam, who serves as Law and Home Affairs Minister, was awarded $195,000, while Foreign Minister Balakrishnan received $161,000 in damages.
Justice Audrey Lim, in her judgement, stated that the article implied the ministers had corruptly or improperly enriched themselves through the property deals. This decision underscores the stringent approach of Singaporean courts to reporting perceived as damaging to the reputation of public figures, a characteristic frequently observed in the nation's legal landscape.
Bloomberg's legal counsel had argued that the article merely reported on a public debate concerning the properties and did not assert that the ministers acted corruptly. However, the court rejected this defence, asserting that the article's framing went beyond mere reporting to imply misconduct.
