De Beers Suspends Production at Venetia Diamond Mine, 4,000 Jobs Affected
De Beers, the multinational diamond corporation, has announced the suspension of operations at its Venetia mine in South Africa. Production at the flagship site is expected to cease for a minimum of two years, a direct consequence of a substantial decline in worldwide diamond demand.
The move affects more than 4,000 workers, comprising both direct employees and contractors. Venetia, located in Limpopo province, is South Africa's largest diamond producer and a vital economic pillar for the region. The mine transitioned from an open-pit operation to an underground mine in 2022, following a $2.3 billion investment.
De Beers reported a sharp 44% fall in sales during its most recent reporting period, selling only $295 million worth of diamonds. This downturn reflects broader challenges within the diamond industry, which has seen prices for rough diamonds decrease by approximately 6.5% over the past year. Analysts attribute the slump to several factors, including reduced consumer spending in key markets and increased availability of lab-grown diamonds. The company maintains that it will continue to monitor market conditions to determine a potential restart date for mining activities.
