Liuyang Fireworks Plant Explosion Kills Twenty-Six, Injures Sixty-One in Hunan Province
A fireworks factory explosion in Liuyang, Hunan province, has claimed the lives of 26 individuals and left 61 wounded. Rescue efforts at the Huasheng Fireworks plant concluded following the Monday afternoon blast, which necessitated the evacuation of all residents within a three-kilometre radius.
Over 1,500 emergency responders, aided by dogs, drones, and robots, were deployed to the site, successfully rescuing seven people trapped under debris. Police have initiated an investigation into the cause of the explosion and have reportedly implemented "control measures" against those managing the fireworks company.
Officials stated that two gunpowder warehouses within the facility presented a high risk during rescue operations. Measures, including humidifying the area, were enacted to avert further incidents. The force of the blast shattered windows in nearby residential buildings and deformed aluminium frames, with some injured parties suffering bone trauma from flying debris.
President Xi Jinping has called for a thorough investigation and accountability for those deemed responsible. Local authorities confirmed on Tuesday that environmental indicators for water and air quality in the vicinity remain within normal limits. Liuyang city is globally recognised as a primary centre for fireworks production, a sector prone to such deadly incidents within China, as evidenced by a prior explosion in Hubei province which killed 12 people in February.
