Llantwit Major Residents Challenge Vale of Glamorgan Council's Lidl Supermarket Approval
Villagers are pursuing a Welsh government appeal against the Vale of Glamorgan council's 2024 approval for a Lidl supermarket. The proposed store, situated at a junction between Llantwit Major and Llanmaes, faces opposition from residents concerned about rural impact.
Countryside Matters Warns of Harm
During the appeal's closing statements, Sioned Davies, representing Countryside Matters, contended the proposal would inflict "real and acknowledged harm" on the landscape. She argued the development would blur the distinction between Llantwit Major and Llanmaes, causing "clear degradation of the rural environment." Davies added that the site's inaccessibility by foot or bike would undermine council active transport goals, asserting that the "benefits do not outweigh the harms" of this "unjustified major development in the open countryside."
John Barrett, representing competing supermarkets Filco and Co-op, echoed these concerns, stating the "out-of-centre" Lidl would irreversibly alter the site's "functional visual role" and be overly reliant on private vehicles.
Council and Lidl Defend Proposal
Gregory Jones KC, for Vale of Glamorgan council, described the proposal as a "logical rounding off of Llantwit Major rather than an intrusion into untouched landscape." He dismissed claims of merging the villages, citing the separating road, and argued for Llanmaes's need for a "modern discount supermarket."
Douglas Edwards KC, representing Lidl, highlighted "unprecedented" resident support, claiming the supermarket would reduce the need for shopping in towns like Barry and would not cause "unacceptable harm to the countryside." Lidl's Rhydian Griffiths noted nearly 3,800 petition signatories from Llantwit Major and surrounding areas, urging ministers to recognise this support.
Local residents, like Gail Kirkham, 70, from Llanmaes, stated, "All we're trying to do is protect the countryside." Linda Christmas, 63, voiced concerns over increased traffic and the potential for Llantwit Major and Llanmaes to merge.
