London Bus Driver Sergei Krajev Dies After Assault on Battersea Bridge
A London bus driver, Sergei Krajev, 64, has died after being attacked on Battersea Bridge. Mr Krajev was found critically injured on the south London crossing at approximately 00:30 BST on Monday and was subsequently taken to hospital by air ambulance. The Metropolitan Police confirmed his death on Tuesday.
His family described him as a “wonderful husband, father, and grandfather,” further characterising the Transport for London driver as a “thoughtful, tactful, and conscientious person who cared about those around him.” They added: “In his role as a bus driver, he was punctual, reliable and willing to help. He valued good relationships with his colleagues and approached his duties with care and dedication.”
Gary Jones, 32, of Hospital Bridge Road, Twickenham, had previously appeared in court charged with causing grievous bodily harm. He was remanded in custody following his appearance at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
Police stated the assault occurred on a pavement outside the bus, which had been stationary at a stop. Following Mr Krajev’s death, the Met has now escalated the inquiry into a murder investigation. Det Insp Sarah Lee, leading the investigation, stated that officers are working closely with Transport for London and continue to appeal for information from the public.
Mr Jones is scheduled to appear next at Kingston Crown Court on 15 June.
