Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva Secures Fourth Presidential Term in Brazil Run-off
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has clinched his fourth term as Brazil's president, triumphing over Flávio Bolsonaro in a tightly fought run-off election. The veteran left-wing politician garnered 50.9% of the vote, marking a significant political comeback.
Lula's victory follows a first round in which he led Bolsonaro by five percentage points, necessitating the run-off. Bolsonaro, who had been seeking a second term, secured 49.1% of the ballots.
During his previous tenure from 2003 to 2010, Lula presided over a period of economic growth and social programmes that lifted millions out of poverty. His return to the presidency signifies a notable shift in Brazilian political leadership.
