Luxury Cruise Ship Villa Vie Odyssey Suspends Voyage in Cambodia Over Fuel Price Surge
The Villa Vie Odyssey, a long-term luxury cruise vessel, has suspended its journey indefinitely, leaving 160 passengers stranded in Cambodia. The company cited a 'dramatic and unanticipated increase in fuel costs' as the reason for the halt, which has disrupted a three-and-a-half-year world tour.
Passengers, many of whom have sold their homes to live permanently on the ship, were informed that the vessel would remain in a Cambodian port while the company attempts to stabilise its operational costs. This sudden cessation has necessitated 'temporary living arrangements' for those on board, with the company offering support to navigate the unforeseen disruption.
Villa Vie Residences, the operator, purchased the ship in January, converting it from a ferry for its extended cruise concept. The incident underscores the inherent vulnerabilities within the luxury travel sector to volatile global commodity markets, despite premium pricing.
