Maddy Cusack Inquest Adjourned as Coroner Requests Further Sheffield United Evidence
The inquest into the death of Sheffield United women's player Maddy Cusack has been adjourned by the senior coroner for Nottinghamshire, Miss Mairin Casey. Ms Cusack, aged 27, was found deceased at her family home in Duffield, Derbyshire, on 20 September 2023.
Miss Casey stated the inquest would resume once further evidence is gathered from Sheffield United. This evidence pertains to an internal complaint Ms Cusack made to the club five months before her death. The coroner indicated that additional statements are required from club employees concerning the nature of this complaint and the subsequent actions taken.
Previously, Sheffield United issued a statement acknowledging that a formal complaint had been made by Ms Cusack, which was being investigated at the time of her death. The club also confirmed that it had commissioned an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ms Cusack's passing.
Ms Cusack, a midfielder and marketing executive for the club, was Sheffield United Women's longest-serving player. Her passing prompted tributes from across the football community.
