Magnitude 6.7 Earthquake Strikes Peru's Ayacucho Region, Causing Building Damage and Power Outages
A magnitude 6.7 earthquake has caused damage to buildings and extensive power cuts across Peru's Ayacucho region. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the tremor's epicentre was approximately 100km deep, a factor that typically mitigates surface shaking but can extend its felt area.
Peruvian authorities have not yet released official figures on injuries or fatalities, but initial assessments confirm structural damage to various buildings. Electricity supplies were disrupted in several areas, affecting thousands of residents.
The deep focus of the earthquake meant its impact was felt across a broader swathe of the country, though the most significant effects appear to be concentrated in the Ayacucho department. Emergency services are currently evaluating the full extent of the damage and coordinating relief efforts for affected communities.
