Burnham Faces Reform UK Challenge

Mr Burnham, the Labour candidate, is anticipated to contend with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for the party leadership if he re-enters Parliament. His primary rival for the Makerfield seat is Robert Kenyon of Reform UK, a local councillor and plumber who secured second place in the constituency during the 2024 general election.

Opinion polls within Makerfield suggest a lead for Mr Burnham, though the contest is projected to be close. Reform UK's strong performance in recent local elections in the area, where they won all seats, underscores the challenge. Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, has been actively campaigning for Mr Kenyon, who has highlighted his working-class background and local ties. Mr Kenyon has faced scrutiny over past social media remarks concerning Brexit, abortion, and Ukraine, to which he has responded by stating he is not a "career politician" and aims to ensure constituents "feel listened to."

Leadership Ambitions and Local Concerns

The by-election was triggered by the resignation of former Makerfield MP Josh Simons, reportedly to facilitate Mr Burnham's return to national politics. Mr Burnham, who grew up in the constituency, has emphasised his local connections but has been accused by opponents of using the by-election as a stepping stone to Number 10. He has pledged to ensure Westminster addresses the needs of Makerfield and similar communities, which he argues have been long neglected.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has cautioned against a Labour leadership contest, stating it would be detrimental to the country and vowing to resist any challenge. He also indicated a potential Cabinet role for Mr Burnham if he wins in Makerfield, telling reporters: "I hope he wins the by-election and he'll play a big part in the Labour government."

Restore Britain, a new party founded by former Reform MP Rupert Lowe, is contesting its first by-election in Makerfield. Their candidate, local businesswoman Rebecca Shepherd, is polling a distant third, ahead of the Conservatives, Greens, and Liberal Democrats. The party's platform includes "reversing mass immigration" and "rewarding British workers."

Conservative candidate Michael Winstanley, a former Wigan mayor, has focused on local regeneration and reducing road congestion. Liberal Democrat Jake Austin, a Stockport councillor, and Green candidate Sarah Wakefield, a Manchester City councillor, are also campaigning on local issues, with Ms Wakefield urging voters to "not vote in anger, vote in hope."
