Manchester Airport Brawl: Two Men Avoid Second Retrial After Juries Fail to Reach Verdicts
Muhammad Amaad, 26, and Mohammed Fahir Amaaz, 21, will not undergo a second retrial concerning allegations of assaulting a Greater Manchester Police constable at Manchester Airport on 23 July 2024. The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed it would not seek a further hearing, following two previous juries at Liverpool Crown Court failing to reach verdicts.
Amaaz, who appeared via videolink from custody, was previously convicted of assaulting two female officers and a Starbucks customer during the same alleged incident. He is scheduled for sentencing on 26 June.
Prosecutor Paul Greaney KC informed the court that the law generally presumes against third trials, reserving them for "exceptional circumstances". He stated that despite the seriousness of the charge and public interest, the case was not considered one of "extreme gravity". Judge Neil Flewitt KC subsequently directed not guilty verdicts for both defendants on this specific charge.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) maintains an ongoing investigation into the use of force by Greater Manchester Police officers during the incident. A spokesperson for the IOPC stated the investigation is at an advanced stage, with new evidence from October 2025 requiring further inquiry. Amaaz has been in custody for the past 10 months following his earlier convictions.
