Massive Explosion in Andover Industrial Estate Incinerates Buildings, Injures Resident
An industrial estate in Andover, Hampshire, was the scene of a significant fire and subsequent explosion on Thursday, causing extensive damage and hospitalising one person. Emergency services, including Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, were dispatched to the Walworth Industrial Estate after reports of a large blaze.
Witnesses described a formidable blast, which reportedly occurred around 02:40 BST. Scott Johnson, a photographer whose studio is located within the estate, recounted being struck by debris following the explosion. He was taken to hospital for treatment of a leg injury.
Fire crews from Andover, Whitchurch, Sutton Scotney, Basingstoke, and Eastleigh battled the inferno, which engulfed several units. The scale of the explosion caused structural collapse and widespread debris across the industrial area. The immediate vicinity was cordoned off as emergency personnel worked to secure the site and investigate the incident.
The precise cause of the fire and the subsequent explosion has not yet been determined. Investigations are underway to ascertain the origins of the blaze and the nature of any materials involved that might have contributed to the powerful blast.
