Millions Across England, Scotland, and Wales Vote in Post-2024 General Election Polls
Millions across England, Scotland, and Wales are casting ballots today in the most substantial electoral event since the 2024 general election. These polls represent the second set of elections to occur during Prime Minister Keir Starmer's administration.
In Scotland, all 129 Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) are standing for re-election. The outcome will determine the governing party responsible for devolved matters such as health and education, with the Scottish National Party currently holding power.
Wales sees 92 seats contested in an expanded Senedd. Labour has maintained continuous control of the Welsh government since devolution in 1999, and the party securing the most seats is expected to lead policy on devolved issues.
Across England, approximately 5,000 councillors in 136 local authorities and six mayoral positions are up for election. Labour presently controls or leads most of these council areas. These local elections will decide the administration of essential public services including education, social care, waste management, and transport.
Eligible voters, including British, Irish, and qualifying foreign nationals aged 18 and over, can participate. Photo identification, such as a passport or driving licence, is mandatory for in-person voting in the English local elections, a requirement not imposed in Scotland or Wales. Most results from England, Scotland, and Wales are anticipated to be announced tomorrow.
