Morrisons Manager Sean Egan, 46, Sacked for Confronting Aggressive Shoplifter in Aldridge Store
Sean Egan, a 46-year-old former Morrisons store manager, claims he was sacked after confronting a persistent shoplifter who turned aggressive and spat at him. The incident occurred in December at the Aldridge store, near Walsall, where Mr Egan had been employed for 29 years.
Mr Egan explained his intervention, stating, "As the store manager, I put myself in a position to protect my staff and customers. There's a lot of pressure in retail to protect the product, to not lose money, as you would in any business and I tried to do that."
During his disciplinary hearing, Mr Egan, from Lanesfield in Wolverhampton, was informed his dismissal was due to not adhering to the company's 'deter-and-not-detain' policy. He recounted, "As part of the policy for me as the store manager, it is to escort him out the premises yet as I was doing so he was very aggressive and spitting at me." He further detailed that as he attempted to remove the individual, he was spat at again, prompting him to react by stepping forward and grabbing the man's arm to prevent him from accessing his bag.
Morrisons declined to comment on the specific case, though a spokesperson affirmed the "health and safety of all colleagues and customers is of paramount importance." The company stated it has "very clear guidance, procedures and controls in place to protect our colleagues and customers from the risk of harm, which must be strictly followed." These procedures include detailed instructions for handling shoplifting incidents, designed to de-escalate situations and protect those involved, with a policy not to "ask colleagues to put themselves at risk."
Mr Egan, who has known no other employment since the age of 17, is now grappling with the personal and financial fallout of his dismissal, stating his last pay was in January and his family is "barely surviving." He expressed frustration over what he perceives as a lack of adequate support and policies to safeguard employees from theft and violence within the retail sector.
