Mount Fuji Implements Rescue Fees for Off-Season Hikers From Summer 2024
A new policy on Mount Fuji will introduce charges for rescue services targeting hikers who become lost during the off-season. This initiative, announced by local authorities, aims to address a documented rise in accidents and the strain placed on emergency services by individuals attempting the ascent outside the official climbing period, which typically runs from July to early September.
The specific fee structure and implementation details are expected to be finalised by summer 2024. The move reflects growing concern among Japanese officials regarding the safety of climbers who embark on the challenging trek during colder months, often without adequate gear or experience for the conditions. These off-season ascents frequently lead to situations requiring costly and hazardous rescue missions.
This measure comes in tandem with other efforts to manage tourism and safety on Japan's iconic peak, including a recently introduced daily cap on climbers and a mandatory fee for all those using the most popular Yoshida trail. These interventions collectively underscore a shift towards greater regulation of access to Mount Fuji, prioritising climber safety and environmental preservation over unrestricted access.
