Nairobi Airport Flights Grounded by Striking Aviation Workers

Flights at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi were severely disrupted today as members of the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) commenced a strike. Kenya Airways confirmed delays exceeding six hours and multiple flight cancellations, leaving hundreds of travellers unable to depart.

The industrial action follows KAWU's opposition to a proposed merger between Kenya Airways and the Kenya Airports Authority. The union contends that the merger threatens the employment terms and conditions of its members.

Government officials have condemned the strike, deeming it illegal and citing a court order that prohibited the industrial action. Authorities stated that measures were being implemented to restore normal operations and ensure passenger safety. However, the immediate impact saw chaotic scenes at the terminal, with passengers expressing frustration over the lack of clear information and lengthy waits.
