New York State Police Assume Cornell University Sex Complaint Investigations After Campus Backlash
New York State Police will now take charge of all sex complaint investigations at Cornell University, Governor Kathy Hochul confirmed. The move comes in the wake of considerable public and political condemnation regarding the institution's response to serious allegations of gang rape implicating members of a campus fraternity.
Governor Hochul stated that state police involvement would ensure a thorough and impartial examination of all future complaints. The previous system, where the university conducted its own internal inquiries, faced scrutiny for perceived inadequacies and a lack of transparency, particularly concerning the alleged actions within the fraternity.
This shift in investigative responsibility underscores a broader concern about how higher education establishments manage allegations of sexual misconduct. Critics argue that universities often prioritise institutional reputation over victim support and justice, leading to calls for external oversight.
