NHS Staff Receive Payout Following Nitrous Oxide Exposure, Union Confirms
NHS staff, predominantly midwives, have received a compensation payout after suffering health issues due to prolonged exposure to nitrous oxide gas in hospital delivery suites. The settlement, confirmed by the trade union Unite, resolves a protracted legal dispute involving hundreds of healthcare professionals.
The legal action contended that staff were exposed to unsafe levels of Entonox, a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen commonly used for pain relief in labour, over many years. This exposure allegedly led to a range of health problems, including neurological damage, anaemia, and reproductive issues, prompting the significant collective claim.
Unite highlighted that this represents the most extensive group legal action ever brought by midwives in the UK. The union emphasised the importance of employers ensuring robust safety measures and adequate ventilation systems in clinical environments to protect staff from occupational hazards. While the specific terms of the settlement remain undisclosed, it concludes a long-running legal battle for those affected.
