
Northrop Grumman Robot Mission Launched to Reposition Falling Hubble Telescope
A robotic mission funded by NASA and executed by Northrop Grumman has commenced with the objective of safeguarding the Hubble Space Telescope. The spacecraft launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on a trajectory to rendezvous with Hubble and adjust its orbital altitude.
The Hubble Space Telescope, a collaboration between NASA and the European Space Agency, has been in operation for over three decades, providing critical astronomical data. However, atmospheric drag has caused a slow but steady decay in its orbit, necessitating intervention to prevent its eventual re-entry and destruction in the Earth's atmosphere.
The Northrop Grumman spacecraft is equipped to autonomously dock with Hubble and then use its propulsion system to push the telescope into a more stable, higher orbit. This manoeuvre is designed to extend Hubble's operational lifespan by several years, allowing for continued scientific observation.
This mission underscores the persistent efforts to maintain and extend the utility of long-serving space assets, particularly those with significant scientific value.
