Over 40,000 Fridge-Freezers Stranded at Docks Following Recycling Firm's Collapse

More than 40,000 fridge-freezers are currently stranded at various UK docks, unable to be processed after a recycling company ceased trading in 2025. This cessation of operations led directly to the suspension of household fridge-freezer collections across the country, creating a significant backlog.

The appliances, which contain ozone-depleting substances and fluorinated greenhouse gases, require specialised handling. Their prolonged storage at port facilities presents both an environmental and logistical challenge.

A potential takeover of the collapsed recycling firm is reportedly in progress. Until this acquisition is finalised, the collection and processing of these large household appliances are expected to remain on hold, leaving local authorities and waste management services grappling with the ongoing disruption.
