Peruvian Election Faces Delays Amidst Logistical Failures
Peru's general election has been marred by widespread logistical issues, forcing electoral authorities to extend voting by a day. Over 50,000 citizens, particularly in Lima and at international polling stations, were unable to cast their mandatory ballots on Sunday due to late openings or complete failures of polling stations to operate.
President José María Balcázar attributed the disarray to the company contracted for ballot material delivery, which failed to perform its duties on schedule. Voting is compulsory for Peruvians aged 18 to 70, with fines levied for non-compliance.
Close Race and Inevitable Run-off
A preliminary count of approximately half the votes shows conservative candidate Keiko Fujimori with a slender lead over right-wing former Lima mayor Rafael López Aliaga. However, all candidates remain significantly short of the 50% required for an outright victory, making a run-off election on 7th June almost certain. The battle for the second spot remains incredibly tight, with a left-wing candidate potentially challenging the conservative frontrunners.
Addressing Political Instability and Public Distrust
The incoming president will face the formidable task of restoring public trust in a political system plagued by a decade of scandals, impeachments, and a rapid succession of leaders. Voters have prioritised tackling corruption and escalating crime rates, particularly extortion affecting public transport workers. Keiko Fujimori, a four-time presidential hopeful and daughter of former autocratic leader Alberto Fujimori, benefits from high name recognition but also faces opposition due to her father's controversial legacy. Both Fujimori and López Aliaga have vowed to employ an "iron fist" approach to combat the country's crime wave. The composition of the newly re-established 60-member Senate, which cannot be dissolved by the president, is also expected to be crucial for future governance.
