Pistol Discovered in Lake Annecy Offers New Avenue in 2012 Al-Hilli Killings

French investigators have announced the recovery of a 7.65mm pistol from Lake Annecy, a decade after the brutal, unsolved murders of Saad al-Hilli, his wife Ikbal, and mother-in-law Suhaila al-Allaf. The weapon was discovered by a private diving team conducting unrelated searches in the body of water. Saad al-Hilli and his family, British tourists, were found shot dead in their car near Chevaline, Haute-Savoie, in September 2012.

The al-Hilli family's two young daughters survived the attack. Four-year-old Zeena remained hidden under her mother's body for hours, while her seven-year-old sister, Zainab, was severely wounded but later recovered. A local cyclist, Sylvain Mollier, was also killed in the assault.

Authorities have confirmed the weapon has been sent for forensic examination, including ballistic analysis, to determine if it is connected to the 2012 killings. Previous leads in the case have included a local man, Patrice Menegaldo, a former foreign legionnaire who took his own life, and a motorcyclist seen near the crime scene. Despite extensive resources allocated to the inquiry over the years, no perpetrator has been formally identified or charged.
