Plymouth Ordnance Scare: Homes Evacuated as Military Extends Cordon to 400 Metres
Residential properties within a 400-metre radius of a Plymouth building site are undergoing evacuation following reports of suspected ordnance. The cordon, initially 200 metres, was extended on the advice of military bomb disposal experts to facilitate their work safely.
Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed the cordon's epicentre is Flamborough Road, in the Southway area of Plymouth. Reports were first received around 14:30 BST. Officers are directly notifying affected properties, with local authorities coordinating plans for displaced residents. The public has been advised to avoid the area entirely.
Plymouth City Council has stated the duration of the cordon remains uncertain, contingent on the “outcome of the specialist assessment.” Residents have been urged to arrange alternative accommodation with friends or family for the next two nights. Those unable to do so should contact the council for assistance and proceed to Southway Youth and Community Centre.
A Royal Navy Explosives Ordnance Disposal team from HMNB Devonport is currently managing the situation on site. While reassuring the community that this is a precautionary measure with no immediate risk to the wider public, authorities reiterate the importance of avoiding the cordon area. Several schools within the vicinity have announced closures for Thursday due to the emergency situation.
