Post Office Scandal Victim Joins Honours List, Dedicates OBE to Deceased Sub-Postmasters
Jo Hamilton, a 92-year-old sub-postmistress and one of the thousands wrongly prosecuted in the Post Office Horizon scandal, has been appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). Hamilton stated her intention to dedicate the honour to “all sub-postmasters we have lost,” acknowledging those who died without witnessing the widespread overturning of convictions.
Hamilton's own conviction for false accounting was quashed in December 2021, a pivotal moment that illuminated the extent of the Post Office's failings. She was among over 700 branch managers wrongly accused of theft, fraud, and false accounting due to the Post Office’s defective Horizon IT system. The ensuing legal and public outcry has revealed what many consider one of the most significant miscarriages of justice in recent British history.
The Post Office continues to face scrutiny over its handling of the affair, with ongoing public inquiries and calls for accountability for those responsible for the wrongful prosecutions. The long-term financial and personal devastation inflicted upon victims remains a central focus, as redress schemes are criticised for their protracted nature and insufficient compensation levels.
