President Lai Ching-te Cancels Eswatini Trip After African Nations Revoke Flight Permits
President Lai Ching-te of Taiwan has cancelled his planned trip to the Southern African nation of Eswatini. Taiwanese officials assert that China exerted significant economic and diplomatic pressure on Seychelles, Mauritius, and Madagascar, leading to the unexpected revocation of flight permits for President Lai's aircraft.
This incident represents the first publicly acknowledged instance where a Taiwanese leader's international travel has been disrupted by such revocations. China, for its part, has denied coercion while simultaneously commending the three Indian Ocean nations for upholding the "one-China principle," under which Beijing claims sovereignty over Taiwan.
Eswatini remains one of only 12 nations maintaining diplomatic ties with Taiwan, and its sole African ally. Officials from Seychelles and Madagascar reportedly stated their decisions were based on their non-recognition of Taiwan as a sovereign entity.
President Lai criticised China's actions, labelling them as "coercive" and indicative of the risks authoritarian regimes pose to the international order. He affirmed that Taiwan's commitment to global engagement would not be deterred by such threats.
The Eswatini government expressed regret over President Lai's inability to visit but affirmed the continued strength of their bilateral relationship. A special envoy is now expected to attend the King's 40th accession anniversary and birthday celebrations on President Lai's behalf.
Chinese state media has praised the actions of the countries involved, with a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office reiterating Beijing's appreciation for their adherence to the "one-China principle." The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs further stated that the notion of a "President of the Republic of China" no longer holds international recognition, a direct reference to President Lai's official title.
Western allies, including some in the US Congress, have criticised the African nations involved, framing their actions as capitulation to Chinese pressure. US Senator Ted Cruz specifically accused Mauritius of aligning with the Chinese Communist Party.
