President Macron Limits French Weekend Protests to Authorised Union Demonstrations Only
French President Emmanuel Macron has declared that public demonstrations this weekend will be restricted exclusively to those sanctioned by trade unions. The move follows a period of public unrest across the nation, ostensibly aimed at maintaining order.
Key cities are taking further restrictive measures. Authorities in Lyon and Nice have issued blanket prohibitions on all demonstrations, regardless of their nature or affiliation. This centralised control over public assembly represents a significant curtailment of protest rights, ostensibly to prevent further disturbances.
Macron's administration justifies these restrictions by citing previous instances of property damage and public disorder during recent protests. Critics argue that such broad limitations on assembly effectively stifle legitimate dissent under the guise of security, pointing to a pattern of state overreach in managing public expression. The policy effectively cedes the streets to state-approved narratives, marginalising spontaneous or non-union-affiliated movements.
