President Macron Urges Calm Across France After Three Nights of Riots
French President Emmanuel Macron has appealed for calm across the nation, warning that the widespread rioting must not intensify. His address followed a third night of violent demonstrations and property damage across France, sparked by the fatal police shooting of 17-year-old Nahel M. during a traffic stop in Nanterre.
Macron chaired an emergency inter-ministerial crisis unit meeting, stressing the need for collective de-escalation. The unrest has seen public buildings, shops, and vehicles set ablaze, leading to numerous arrests and significant disruption in urban centres.
The President condemned the violence, urging citizens and institutions to work towards a return to order. The government faces increasing pressure to contain the situation, as the protests highlight deep-seated socio-economic frustrations and mistrust in policing within marginalised communities.
