Prime Minister Directs FA to Challenge FIFA Over Mexico-England Match Schedule
The Prime Minister directly instructed the Football Association (FA) to contest a decision by FIFA regarding the kick-off time for the upcoming match between England and Mexico. FIFA had intended to reschedule the game, moving it forward by six hours, a change that would have resulted in an earlier start than originally planned.
Reports suggest FIFA’s rationale for the proposed alteration was a forecast of thunderstorms in the region where the match is to be held. The Prime Minister's office, however, viewed the potential disruption to supporters and broadcasters as unacceptable.
Following the Prime Minister’s directive, the FA engaged in discussions with FIFA. These negotiations resulted in FIFA retracting its decision to reschedule the match, ensuring the original kick-off time will be maintained. The intervention underscores the government's readiness to engage on matters perceived to impact national interests, even in the realm of international sports organisation.
