Prime Minister Visits Aberfan Before 60th Anniversary of 1966 Colliery Spoil Tip Disaster
The Prime Minister has visited Aberfan in south Wales, observing a moment of silence at the village memorial ahead of the 60th anniversary of the catastrophic colliery spoil tip collapse. On 21 October 1966, a mountain of coal waste slid down a hillside, engulfing Pantglas Junior School and several houses. The disaster resulted in the deaths of 116 children and 28 adults.
During the visit, the Prime Minister laid a wreath at the memorial garden, which stands on the former site of Pantglas Junior School. He described the event as a 'horrifying tragedy' and acknowledged the lasting impact on the community. Survivors and relatives of those who perished continue to advocate for the proper remembrance and historical understanding of the disaster.
The 1966 tragedy led to significant changes in mining safety regulations across the UK, though the psychological and social scars on Aberfan remain profound. The community's sustained efforts have ensured the victims are not forgotten and that the lessons from the industrial negligence are periodically revisited.
