Prosecutor Investigates Sexual Misconduct Claims Against California Governor Candidate Eric Swalwell
The Manhattan District Attorney's Office has confirmed it is investigating claims of sexual misconduct against US Congressman Eric Swalwell, who is currently a prominent candidate for the governorship of California.
Allegations and Denials
Four women have come forward with allegations against Mr Swalwell, ranging from sexual harassment to rape. One of these alleged incidents reportedly took place in New York. Mr Swalwell, a married father-of-three, has categorically denied these claims, stating, "For nearly 20 years, I have served the public – as a prosecutor and a congressman and have always protected women. I will defend myself with the facts and where necessary bring legal action."
The first public accusation surfaced in the San Francisco Chronicle on Friday, detailing a former staff member's account of inappropriate comments, sexual messages, and two alleged assaults, including one in New York after a charity gala in 2024. CNN subsequently published accusations from four women. Mr Swalwell's legal team has reportedly issued cease-and-desist letters to two of the accusers.
Official Response and Political Fallout
The Manhattan District Attorney's Office has urged any survivors or individuals with information regarding these allegations to contact its Special Victims Division, assuring a trauma-informed, survivor-centred approach. Within hours of the allegations emerging, Mr Swalwell's campaign suffered significant setbacks, with prominent supporters such as Senator Adam Schiff and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries withdrawing their backing. Furthermore, an unsigned statement from Mr Swalwell's congressional and campaign aides expressed horror at the allegations, standing in solidarity with the women who have come forward.
These allegations come at a critical juncture for the Californian gubernatorial primary, just weeks before postal ballots are distributed. Mr Swalwell had been projected as a frontrunner among Democratic candidates, but the crowded field and these new developments could significantly impact the race.
