Public Health Agency Issues Heat-Health Alerts Across England as Temperatures Approach 34C
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has initiated a series of heat-health alerts across England, with forecasters predicting temperatures could climb to 34C in some areas. A yellow alert, the lowest level, covers the North West, North East, and South West regions. Meanwhile, an amber alert, indicating a more significant health risk, has been issued for London, the South East, East Midlands, West Midlands, East of England, and Yorkshire and the Humber.
These alerts became effective from Monday morning and are scheduled to remain in place until Thursday afternoon. The UKHSA, operating in conjunction with the Met Office, stated that the decision to issue the alerts was based on the latest meteorological data.
Dr. Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at the UKHSA, advised the public to take precautions, particularly those who may be more vulnerable to the effects of extreme heat. Recommendations include staying hydrated, seeking shade during the hottest parts of the day, and checking on elderly relatives or neighbours.
The Met Office indicated that while temperatures will rise across the country, the most significant heat is expected to concentrate in southern and central England, with a slight cooling trend anticipated towards the end of the week.
