Reform UK Councillor Glenn Gibbins Suspended Over Online Racism Allegations in Sunderland
Glenn Gibbins, recently elected to Sunderland City Council for the Hylton Castle ward, has been suspended from Reform UK. The suspension follows accusations that Gibbins made racist comments online, specifically targeting Sunderland's Nigerian community in a post reportedly from March 2024. He also faces earlier allegations of misogyny.
Darren Grimes, Deputy Leader of Durham County Council, confirmed Gibbins' suspension and stated that the party is investigating the 'very serious allegations'. Grimes conceded that this situation represented a 'failure of the vetting process'.
Reform UK's deputy leader, Richard Tice, addressed the allegations by stating the party has internal processes for inappropriate conduct. However, Tice largely framed the accusations as 'smearing and sneering', asserting that voters supported Reform due to dissatisfaction with the established Conservative and Labour parties.
