Reform UK Home Affairs Spokesman Yusuf Vows Not To Take Voters For Granted After Gains
Reform UK's Home Affairs Spokesman, Zia Yusuf, has declared the party will "never take voters for granted" following its considerable electoral advances across England, Scotland, and Wales. Yusuf welcomed intensified scrutiny of the party's performance, characterising the outcomes as a "historic set of results for the country".
The party secured over 1,400 new councillors in England, displacing the Conservatives in regions such as Essex and Suffolk, and outperforming Labour in traditional northern and Midlands strongholds. In the Welsh Parliament elections, Reform UK finished second to Plaid Cymru, whilst achieving joint second place with Labour in Scotland.
Yusuf asserted that Reform UK stands as "the only truly national party that is competitive across the country," adding that these results represent a significant stride towards Nigel Farage becoming Prime Minister. He emphasised that Reform UK offers a "viable and real alternative to those two old parties."
Highlighting the party's focus, Yusuf outlined core priorities: "secure borders," addressing the cost of living, and the "return of law and order." Reform UK's most pronounced gains occurred in England, where it took control of councils from Labour in areas including Barnsley, Wakefield, Sunderland, and Gateshead. It also moved Hartlepool, Tameside, Redditch, and Tamworth into no overall control. Notably, the party seized Essex County Council, the local authority of Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch.
According to polling expert Sir John Curtice, Reform UK's strongest performances were concentrated in areas that voted overwhelmingly for Brexit in 2016. A projected national share indicates that Reform UK would command 26% of the vote across Great Britain, with the Greens on 18%, and both the Conservatives and Labour on 17%.
