Reform UK Housing Spokesman Sacked Over Grenfell Remarks
Reform UK Spokesman Dismissed After Controversial Grenfell Comments
Simon Dudley, the recently appointed housing spokesman for Reform UK, has been sacked following a public outcry over his remarks concerning the Grenfell Tower disaster. The former Homes England executive faced widespread condemnation after an interview in which he described the tragic fire as a 'tragedy' but added that 'everyone dies in the end'.
Mr Dudley also expressed concerns that building safety regulations, introduced in the wake of the 2017 tragedy, were 'not working' and were stifling housebuilding. These comments were met with strong criticism from the Grenfell Next of Kin group, who labelled them 'ignorant and callous'.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage confirmed Mr Dudley's dismissal at a press conference, stating that the comments were 'deeply inappropriate' and 'frankly rather shocking'. The decision followed calls from political figures, including Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer and Housing Secretary Steve Reed, for Mr Dudley to be removed from his post.
The Grenfell Tower Inquiry concluded that the fire, which claimed 72 lives, was entirely preventable and resulted from systemic failures in building regulation and widespread dishonesty within the industry. Critics, including Green Party MP Siân Berry, condemned Mr Dudley's suggestion that post-Grenfell safety rules 'have gone too far' as 'a new low' that showed 'real disrespect to the victims of Grenfell'.
