Reform UK Secures Havering, Newcastle-under-Lyme Councils, Farage Hails Historic Political Shift
Reform UK has registered substantial gains in local elections across England, marking a notable shift in the political landscape. The party secured control of Havering, its first London borough, and took Newcastle-under-Lyme from the Conservatives.
These victories follow a trend from last year when Reform gained control of ten English councils. Further successes were observed in areas like Essex and Suffolk, where they surged past the Tories, and in the Midlands and northern England, where they picked up seats from Labour.
Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, stated that his party is demonstrating its capacity to win in areas traditionally dominated by both Labour and the Conservatives. Speaking after the Havering result, Farage declared, "What's happened is a truly historic shift in British politics." He highlighted the party's success in former Labour "red wall" constituencies, which the Conservatives had briefly captured in the 2019 general election.
Farage expressed confidence that this surge in support is not a temporary phenomenon, asserting that voters are "now becoming Reformers in every way." The party expects to be a significant contender in the Welsh Parliament elections and "competitive" in Scotland.
Polling analysis by Sir John Curtice indicates that Reform's strongest performances have been in constituencies that voted overwhelmingly for Brexit in 2016.
