Restore Britain Leader Rupert Lowe Minimises Dunblane School Massacre, Criticises UK Handgun Ban
Rupert Lowe, who leads the newly formed Restore Britain party and is contesting the Clacton by-election, has controversially described the Dunblane Primary School massacre as 'one murder'. Speaking to LBC Radio, Mr Lowe questioned the rationale behind the UK's stringent handgun ban, asserting it was implemented 'because there was a murder in Dunblane'.
The 1996 attack in Dunblane, Scotland, resulted in the deaths of 16 children and one teacher. This horrific event prompted immediate and widespread public revulsion, leading to the Firearms (Amendment) Act 1997, which effectively banned the private ownership of handguns in Great Britain.
Mr Lowe, a former MEP, articulated his view during a discussion about firearms ownership, stating: 'We ban things because of a single incident. We ban handguns because there was a murder in Dunblane. That’s one murder.' His remarks have drawn considerable scrutiny, particularly given the historical context and the profound impact the Dunblane tragedy had on UK gun control policy.
The Restore Britain party, founded by Mr Lowe, advocates for a reduction in immigration and a re-evaluation of various established UK policies. His comments on Dunblane represent a significant departure from mainstream political discourse surrounding the event and its legislative aftermath.
