Riot Police Injured as Thousands of Celtic Fans Clash in Glasgow City Centre
Riot police faced “significant levels of disorder” in Glasgow city centre on Saturday as thousands of Celtic fans celebrated the club’s fifth successive Scottish Premiership title. Bottles and other missiles were thrown at officers in the Trongate area, with Police Scotland confirming that multiple officers sustained injuries.
Approximately 3,000 supporters gathered after Celtic secured a 3-1 victory over Heart of Midlothian at Parkhead stadium. Images from the scene showed lines of police with riot shields and one supporter with a visible head wound.
Assistant Chief Constable Mark Sutherland stated that police encountered “unacceptable violence and hostility” when attempting to assist with a medical emergency within the crowd. Specially-trained public order officers were subsequently deployed to restore order, disperse the gathering, and make arrests. Police confirmed extensive enquiries are underway to identify and apprehend further individuals involved in the disturbances.
On the pitch, a pitch invasion by Celtic fans in the final minutes of the match led to its premature conclusion. Hearts later condemned “shameful scenes” and reported “serious physical and verbal abuse” towards their players and staff, prompting an investigation by Police Scotland into these allegations. The incident prevented Hearts players from thanking their travelling supporters and led to the team’s immediate departure from the stadium without completing post-match media duties.
