Robert Bush Defrauded 172 Individuals of £562,000 in Funeral Plan Scheme

Robert Bush, a 63-year-old former funeral director, has admitted to defrauding 172 individuals out of £562,000 through a long-running funeral plan scheme. Canterbury Crown Court heard that victims, many of whom were elderly, have been left without the funeral arrangements they paid for and are facing significant challenges in retrieving their money.

Bush, who operated through companies including Robert Bush Funeral Directors and prepareforthat.co.uk, took payments for funeral plans from 2007 to 2021. However, the court was told that the funds were not invested as promised. Instead, Bush spent a substantial amount of the money, leaving a shortfall of approximately £390,000.

Prosecutor Ben Temple stated that many victims, some now deceased, had attempted to claim their funeral plans, only to discover the funds were unavailable. Efforts by authorities to recover the lost capital for the victims are reportedly underway, but the process is complex given the dissipation of the funds.

Bush pleaded guilty to fraud by abuse of position and will be sentenced on 19 July. The case underscores the critical need for greater scrutiny and regulation within the pre-paid funeral plan industry, particularly concerning the safeguarding of consumer funds.
