Romanian Driver Vasile Barbu Who Killed Team GB Triathlete Faces Deportation

Vasile Barbu, a Romanian national, is set to be deported from the United Kingdom after an immigration judge dismissed his appeal against the Home Office's decision. Barbu was previously convicted of causing death by careless driving following an incident in January 2012 that resulted in the death of Team GB triathlete Claire Squires.

Ms Squires, 30, was killed when Barbu’s van collided with her bicycle on the A40 in Gloucestershire. Barbu, who was 29 at the time of the collision, received a 10-month prison sentence and was banned from driving for two years for his role in the fatal crash.

Following his release from prison, the Home Office initiated deportation proceedings. Barbu contested this decision, arguing that his removal would infringe upon his human rights and his right to a private and family life in the UK. However, during a hearing at the First-tier Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum Chamber) in London, the judge ruled against his appeal, affirming that Barbu's deportation is lawful and proportionate.
